Rafael Nadal ended Roger Federer's five-year reign at Wimbledon, winning an amazing, five-set marathon to take his first title at the All England Club. Nadal ended the Swiss's five-year reign as Wimbledon champion with a thrilling 6-4 6-4 6-7 6-7 9-7 victory.



The Springbok management have called up Western Province hooker Schalk Brits as cover for the injured Bok captain John Smit. Smit was examined by the team's medical staff yesterday, and he will undergo further investigation today following the groin injury he sustained in the first Tri-Nations Test against the All Blacks on Saturday.
All Black lock Bruce Thorn meanwhile has been red-carded for the spear tackle on John Smit, which is where Smit said the injury originated. Sanzar have suspended Thorn for one week "for an act contrary to good sportsmanship".

Australia played to a 169-run win over the West Indies yesterday in the fifth and final one-day cricket internatio! nal at Warner Park. Australia scored 341 for eight off 50 over's, the West Indies 172 were all out off 39.5 over's.
In Karachi, Sri Lanka beats India by 100 runs to successfully defend their Asia Cup title with spinner Ajantha Mendis taking a record 6-13.


Lewis Hamilton gave a master class in wet weather driving yesterday to win the British Grand prix, the McLaren driver lapped almost the entire field, to finish over a minute ahead of Nick Heidfeld's BMW Sauber. Honda's Rubens Barrichello was third for his first podium in four years and Honda's first of the season.


FC AK won a place in the Premier Soccer League's promotion playoff final against Bay United after beating fellow National First Division side Dynamos 2-1 in a tense semifinal playoff second leg match yesterday. Black Leopards were relegated from the Absa Premiership after their 2-1 aggregate defeat against Bay United.

Britain's Ross Fisher won the European Open by 7 shots yesterday. The 27 year old won with a 68 for a 20-under-par total of 268, with Sergio Garcia 2nd. David Frost was 4th, 9 strokes off the lead.
